"I am purchasing a memory journal for my seventy-year-old father-in-law for Christmas this year; he is an introspective, emotional man, who enjoys activities like reading and writing and sharing stories about his life. He will love this book.
Pros about the book: First, there is lots of room to write answers of a decent length, without it becoming overwhelming; second, there are lots of questions, which gives the grandchildren a fuller picture of their grandpa than some other grandpa books I looked at which asked fewer and broader questions ; third, I *love* the "Notes" and "Tell me a Story" sections at the end of every chapter, which allows Grandpa to elaborate on something if he did run out of space, or to include other memories that came to him as he was thinking about his answers to the journal's questions; fourth, I like that there are spaces for photos sprinkled throughout the book, but not too many, because pasting too many photos, even printed copies, might make the book too bulky or wrinkle the pages.
Cons, which lost this book a star: First of all, whoever did the proofreading either doesn't have a complete command of the English language, or else just didn't do a careful job. There are a number of noticeable typos in both this book and the corresponding grandma book, which contains all the same questions as the grandpa one. Second, I really dislike the "Grandfather's Perspective" page in the front of the book, as it is a generic, pre-fabricated "letter to my grandchild"; most of what it has to say is pointless, and where it isn't pointless, it is inapplicable to many families in 2018--for example, most WW2 veterans have either passed on, or are so old that they wouldn't be able to fill out a book like this; and many people who are now of grandparent age are not technologically illiterate--my mother-in-law and my father come to mind, they are both quite tech-savvy. In addition, you should dispense with the "I asked a girl out on a first date like you" on the second page of the Grandfather's Perspective. My father-in-law has two granddaughters, with the potential to have more. Unless they turn out to be lesbians, they will not be asking any girls out on dates like their grandpa did. It would have been better if a page or two had just been left at the beginning for the grandfather to write something personal to the grandchild/children.
Altogether, I do not think those cons are deal-breakers for me; I can white-out and correct the typos and I can either cut out the Grandfather's Perspective page or else paste a piece of paper over it so he can write his own note. Between this book and the other book I am looking at right now, I think this book is going to win out in spite of its faults."
