Shot, a long-barrel, single-shot rifle, shares stories of intrigue, repose, and character—all as they occurred on Rudy’s farm on the North Dakota prairie. Rudy, himself an endearing soul, returns home from World War II with an artificial limb to operate a vibrant, diversified farm where even routine life is replete with adventures. Picture sheep escaping a burning building, ravaging hogs being loaded for butcher, bulls charging man and vehicles, and horses racing wide-eyed down a country lane. Picture also adventures from wild animals, prairie fires, brutal winters, and marauding dogs. Add in colorful hired men, unforgiving firearms, an even an Indian fight. Shot’s adventures arise from challenges on the farm. Rudy faces them with persistence, compassion, and creativity. His eldest son, Tommy, while dumfounded by Rudy’s resilience, has a variety of his own exploits. Both are consumed by the farm work while at the same time absorbed in perpetual drama, some of which is severe and debilitating. Only with a deep faith in God are they able to thrive. Altogether, Rudy’s farm pops like a television series, with episode after episode. Shot tells his tales—truth is stranger than fiction—with aplomb. He brings you in to feel present and engaged. You’ll enjoy Shot. You’ll never forget his farm.

Shot A Rifle True Tales of a Prairie Farm Willard Jackson 9781595558916 Books Reviews

  • A really enjoyable read. I think it's important to understand how we lived when self-sufficiency, discipline and compassion were more important attributes than the number of friends you have, or what you had parked in the driveway. I highly recommend this book!
  • I enjoyed this easy read story of life on a North Dakota farm in the 50's and 60's. Packed with plenty of definitions, it helped someone like me to understand farm life even though I've spent very little time on one. You will experience the life of Tommy and "Shot" as they grow up together.
  • This is an accurate portrayal of life on the prairie during the 50’s and the 60’s in North Dakota. This was a time when nothing was thrown away and everything had a use, a time when a man’s word was his bond. As a neighbor of the author during this time I can attest to his accuracy of life on the farm. It is a well written book by a man that understands the values taught on a ND farm. Thank you for writing this, it brought back many memories. I would recommend this book to everyone.
  • Such a unique read! Shot is a collection of adventurous farm life stories told from the rifle’s perspective. I read this book out loud to my husband on a road trip over a couple days. We had some really great laughs and a few tears. The stories had us fascinated and intrigued—oh, to live like that! Shot is about the kind of life that is bold, brave, built on hard work, and deeply meaningful. And while you are chuckling at the dialogue between Rudy and Tommy, you’ll also discover a sense of nostalgia and respect for days not too far in the past. I definitely recommend this book!
  • Mark Twain would be proud! The author conveys true, albeit fantastical, stories of life on the farm in rural, mid-century North Dakota in a way that, if you didn't grow up on a farm, you almost feel as if you had. It provides several poignant lessons of what it takes to brave the elements, raise crops and animals, deal with the wild and handle misfortune and grief - all in an entertaining, easy-to-read and relatable way.

  • The author was masterful in bringing to life the various ordeals of farm life. I truly enjoyed the educational definitions of so many terms as well as the entertaining aspects. The creativity used to have the narrator actually be the .22 rifle was genius. I can't wait to hear if there are follow-on books from this author.
  • This book brought back many fond memories of life on a farm!! Although I did not live on a farm, I grew up in a small farming community in western Wisconsin, and married a farmer's daughter! The tales told by 'Shot' were entertaining and very informative with the many footnotes on each page. Thanks for taking us down memory lane.......
