  • As someone who loves cars but struggles with repair (despite growing up a mechanic's daughter) here's my take on this Haynes book.

Q If I read this book, can I repair my own car and save money?
A Only if you already know how to do lots of the stuff in this book.

The Haynes Repair Manual is sort of a blend between a mechanic's resource and an owner's manual. It's not the 500-pg behemoth repair book you'll find on dusty shelves in most mechanic's garages, but it's not useless by any means. If you have basic car knowledge, it's good to own this to learn more about your car. If you have more advanced knowledge, you might want it to do some of your own work. If you have no car knowledge, this book is not for you (try "Dare to Repair Your Car" by Julie Sussman and Stephanie Glakas-Tenet instead).

Pros Good price (if you pay $15) and a good resource. Pages can stand a bit of abuse getting knocked about the garage. Helpful photos of parts in different states of disrepair for easy analysis. Troubleshooting guide in the beginning is an invaluable resource for staving off that "What the hell is happening" feeling when something first starts to go wrong. Cons It's hard to shake the feeling that much of this manual is simply copy+pasted from other Haynes books. For example, why not include the manufacturer-specific OBD II codes? I really wanted a quick resource for those since usually you can only see the generic ones.

Overall, I'm glad I finally found this for $15 online instead of $30 at the store. Definitely worth it.
  • I've had Haynes manuals for different cars over the years, most of them very good. This is probably the worst one I've ever had. There are certain repairs I've tried to do using this manual, but some sections of it are very vague. For example, to change the manual transmission fluid, they didn't show any sort of picture or diagram where the drain plugs were located. For bleeding the clutch slave cylinder, they didn't show where it was located (it's buried and hard to find). I changed the timing belt, but it was very poor at describing how to get to the belt and how to properly tension the new belt. I could go on, but overall, they didn't seem to give a lot of thought to the DIY and putting in many of the details/pictures that are so helpful in repairing a car!
  • I'm an unexperienced DIY-er type with a 2003 TL-S, and I was sorely disappointed with this manual. There are three major problems, one for owners of 2003 or earlier models, and two more general.

On the positive side, it's got lots of photos illustrating how to dismantle things--which can be hugely useful with complex interior body panels, which is what I was working on. It also covers more or less everything you could want to know, from how to replace the speakers to how to overhaul the engine.

Major problem #1, however, is that nearly all the illustrations are for model year 2004 or later, which has substantial changes, particularly in the interior. Which means that you're stuck with instructions like "Remove the four screws and six retaining clips." with no indication where they are. Very frustrating. Honestly, there should have been two separate books for '99-'03 (Second Generation) and '04-'08 (Third Generation), except us 2nd gen owners are the ones who got shafted.

Major problem #2 is that the book repeatedly refers you back to a different section for instructions but doesn't tell you what page in that section. For example, if you want to remove the radiator, you need to remove the splash guard, but at that point it just says (exact quote) "(see Chapter 2)." Chapter 2 actually has both an A and a B part, with a total of 36 pages. The actual instructions are buried in 2B ("Engine Overhaul"), under the engine removal section, step 20 (although there is actually an illustration accompanying that). Things like this are all over the place, particularly in the interior electrical chapter, which repeatedly refers you to unspecific sections in the previous chapter, on interior trim.

It's maddening, and there's no good reason for it--if they just couldn't bring themselves to add a few pages of repetitive instructions, they could have at least given specific chapter/page/step references when they send you elsewhere.

Major problem #3 is that the index borders on useless--seven pages long and very general. If you want very specific instructions for some particular part--say, how to remove that splash guard because it's broken and you want to replace it--it's not listed in the index. You just have to guess at what larger part it's related to and look for that (in my case, I guessed radiator, which was wrong--as above, that just sent me to somewhere in chapter 2.

I've only owned a couple of other repair manuals, but this one is a huge step below them, and while I'll stop short of calling it useless for 2nd Generation TL owners, but it's hugely frustrating and just barely helpful.

Oh, and you know what'd be nice? If it told you exactly what size/type/length of screw went where, so when you're reassembling things with the pile of screws you spilled you're not left guessing as to which went where. I've been spoiled by iFixIt's take apart instructions, where they tell you exactly what screw goes exactly where, with meticulous photographs. And they're free.
  • If you're looking at this, then you probably already know exactly what this is. Haynes manual are always handy for DYI repairs although they sometimes cover too many models and variations in one book causing confusion.
  • such a weird manual. I have a 2002 TLS and although it clearly states that it applies to my car, very few images show my car. What ought to be an easy procedure, changing the cabin air filters have nothing to do with the writing or photos in the manual. I have no idea if there is a good manual for my car.
  • Got this as a gift for my brother who owns this car. Haynes manuals are always so well written.
  • I had to refer to this repair manual many times. Good to have.
  • It could be a little more detailed, but it gives you good reference points along the way. If you're even a little mechanically inclined, this manual is all you need.
