A New York Times–bestselling collection of Longmire adventures

Craig Johnson's The Highwayman and An Obvious Fact are now available from Viking.

Ten years ago, Craig Johnson wrote his first short story, the Hillerman Award–winning “Old Indian Trick.” This was one of the earliest appearances of the sheriff who would go on to star in Johnson’s bestselling, award-winning novels and the hit television series Longmire, now streaming on Netflix. Each Christmas Eve thereafter, fans rejoiced when Johnson sent out a new short story featuring an episode in Walt’s life that doesn’t appear in the novels; over the years, many have asked why they can’t buy the stories in book form.

Wait for Signs
gives Longmire fans a chance to own these beloved stories—and one that was published for the first time in the Viking edition—in a single volume. With glimpses of Walt’s past from the incident in “Ministerial Aide,” when the sheriff is mistaken for a deity, to the hilarious “Messenger,” where the majority of the action takes place in a Porta-Potty, Wait for Signs is a necessary addition to any Longmire fan’s shelf and a wonderful way to introduce new readers to the fictional world of Absaroka County, Wyoming.

"I own every book that Craig Johnson has written about Walt Longmire. Craig Johnson is a superb story teller, and he draws you into his stories very quickly, and keeps you there. This GREAT book of short stories "Wait for Signs" is glorious writing! It is not too often that I do not want to finish a book, but this book is one of those rare instances. The stories are so much fun to read, I found that I was wanting for more. I put myself on a diet of only reading one of these stories each day so that the book would last longer than it normally would. If you have never read anything from Craig Johnson (you are missing soooooooooo much!), I would recommend that you begin with this book of his short stories. Be ready to be totally hooked on Walt, Henry, Cady, Vic, Ruby, and a host of well developed characters, only as Craig Johnson can do it..."

  • This is a collection of twelve short stories told by Sheriff Walt Longmire of Absoroka County, Wyoming. Old Indian Trick is one we’ve seen before, an added bonus at the end of Johnson’s novel Sprit of Steamboat.
In Slick-Tongued Devil, a fellow shows up at Walt̢۪s house with a very expensive bible and Martha̢۪s name embossed on the cover. Martha, Walt̢۪s wife, had passed away recently and Walt was pretty sure that Martha wouldn̢۪t have ordered it. Walt recognizes what̢۪s happening and deals with this bible salesman in a fair but businesslike manner.
One of the funniest stories is titled Messenger and features not only Walt but his deputy, Vic Moretti, and his pal Henry Standing Bear. They̢۪d been called to a camping area by forest ranger Chuck Coon; a woman is being menaced by a bear. When they arrive, Henry lures the bear away from the outdoor toilet but they soon discover an owl trapped in the sinister area underneath the toilet seat. The story takes on mystical tones when Henry states that the owl is a messenger and must be rescued. Walt, Vic and Henry go into action and bring the owl out to safety.
In Ministerial Aid, Walt remarks that he̢۪d had a fight with his daughter Cady and she went back to Seattle where she̢۪s in law school. In the third story called Fire Bird Walt tells of getting a call from Cady who̢۪s in Philadelphia. The latter case is more consistent with other stories and Johnson̢۪s novels since Cady does complete law school, becomes a successful attorney, and eventually marries Vic̢۪s brother, all taking place in Philadelphia. This is not a big deal but overall consistency of such a central character would seem to be important.

  • "Wait For Signs" is a collection of Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire short stories to date. Each Christmas Eve, Craig sends out a new story to the fortunate few and these are included here, along with a new tale about a mystical renegade ewe. Some of the stories are outright hilarious while others are a more sober assessment of the human condition on the high plains. Even if you have read some of these elsewhere, it's a fine compilation that no Longmire fan should be without. I am a big fan of the Longmire tales - they speak to me on a level I can't quite put into words other than I sometimes feel I know these places and characters from another life. That is attributable to Craig Johnson's mastery of storytelling, not any deja vu on my part. I suspect a lot of readers of a certain age who grew up with the great westerns will feel similarly. Some may advise a novice Longmire reader to start with the first novel, but I would instead ease in with this excellent compendium and then proceed on to the more dramatic first book. Either way, you won't be sorry, except when you reach the last chapter and find yourself wanting more.
  • I first became aware of Walt Longmire through the eponymous TV show on A&E. When I learned that Longmire was adopted from Craig Johnson's novels, I eagerly sought them out, reading them in order of appearance and enjoying each one immensely. Between novels, Johnson has released several collections of of Longmire short stories, the most recent of which is Wait for Signs. There are no murders in this collection, just Johnson's clear prose about Absaroka County's wise and weathered sheriff, whose wry humor and kindness tempered by sorrow help him deal with the odd characters who drift through America's wide open spaces. Wait for Signs is a great excuse to stay indoors, turn off the TV, and enjoy words on the page and the world they bring to life.
  • I've been waiting for Craig to write a sheep story for so long... With a significant local population of the finest shepherds in the world (the Basque), and Wyoming being home to many thousands of the nation's sheep, I've been dismayed at how infrequently they've been mentioned. Everybody ALWAYS talks about cattle, but nobody ever talks about the sheep! And as a shepherd myself, it seriously bums me out. I have been holding out hope for a Longmire novel featuring the lovely and productive sheep and magnificent shepherds of Absaroka and surrounding counties; but hey - if I only get a short story, it's better than nothing!
  • Once again Craig Johnson did an outstanding job. These stories touch from the heart to the funny bone and all the appropriate places in between. I adore Petunia, but my favorite story so far is The Messenger. I have now read everything Craig Johnson has published and I have to admit, right now, he is my favorite author. I am just going to have a very difficult time waiting for May when the next book is released. I cannot get enough of these characters. Walt, Henry, Ruby, Vic, Dorothy, Doc. Bloomfield and all the rest seem like family and I miss them horribly between the exquisite visits we are allowed which each publication and venue. If yo have not read anything by Craig Johnson, get The Cold Dish now and be introduced to some of the most endearing characters I have ever had the great fortune to meet in this series. You have a great ride ahead, so hold on...and wait for signs!
